Subject: Death in the Family

We say goodbye to Miss Iva (Ivy) Cruse. She passed away about 1:30pm, Oct. 26, 2010 in Rome, Ga. where she had lived for the last couple of years with her daughter. She was in the hospital, due to a battle with pneumonia. Just two weeks ago, she was at a family wedding, singing karoke and belting out "I'll Fly Away" and other Gospel songs. When her daughter was ready to leave, she wasn't, she was having so much fun. They stayed until she sang more songs and was ready to go. In her nineties, Miss Ivy was the last of the "Old Time" members of Benningfield Chapel, having been a member since the 1930's. She had been on my mind the last few days, and I had meant to call her just to talk for awhile, so I guess there was a reason. Miss Ivy was my mentor at the "Chapel" since she handed over the reins to me in Feb., 1999. She had taken full charge after my aunt Mary Clopton Walters passed away in Oct., 1998. Her faith was strong! She was of the line of John Robert (Bobby) Clopton III > George Washington Clopton (My Grandfather) > Ella Clopton Brown > Iva Mae Brown Cruse. I will certainly miss our talks. Rest in Peace Miss Ivy, and I'll do my best to keep the little Church alive and carry on the work there!

It was a special service this morning as The Bishop of our Diocese was there to confirm ten people and recieve a Roman Catholic into The Churcn of England. Lots of people and a longer service than usual. Hope all is well with all of you and life is treating you OK. Take Care! Ed

Subject: Memorial flowers and candles placed in Holy Trinity

On Fifteen August 2010, Ed Hawkins provided photographs of the memorial flowers placed in the Clopton Chantry Chapel after the morning service at Holy Trinity.

These are pictures of the memorial flowers placed in the Clopton Chantry Chapel in memory of Boyd Clopton, the son of "Bill Clopton". In our acceptance of Bill's generous donations the terms were that flowers are to be placed in the Clopton Chantry Chapel on the Sunday's nearest to the birthday of his son, Boyd, in August and in September nearest the birthday of his wife.  There is also a picture of the VOTIVE in the corner of the Clopton Chapel where I've lit two candles; one in memory of Bill and another of his son. Hopefully you might be able to use these on your message board.  Please let me know if you have received these,.

Best wishes to you and your family.  Thanks, Ed

We are genuinely blessed to have friends in England like Ed Hawkins. The photographs will be featured in the next Clopton Family Newsletter

Subject: Robert de Clopton of Warwickshire and his descendants.

David,

We are so glad you are interested in our family and its history.  I am not an expert in our genealogy, but I am always interested to learn something about my ancestors.  We can trace our branch of the Clopton tree back to Cloptons in Suffolk.  I am not sure how that branch might be connected to the Cloptons of Warwickshire, but owing to the uniqueness of the name, it is hard to imagine there is not a connection.  Let me refer you to Gene Clopton who is much better equipped to help you than I.  Gene's e-mail address is:  gcclopton@yahoo.com

You may have already been to this website but it maybe helpful:  http://www.cloptonfamily.org/d_hist/swilkent.html

I have scanned and I am attaching both sides of a pamphlet used at the Clopton Rose Ceremony In Hadliegh two years ago.  I attended that ceremony and had the privilege of accepting the rose on behalf of the family.  On the following Sunday my son and grandson placed the rose on Sir William's tomb at Long Melford.  It was a nice experience for a farm boy from Kansas who grew up with no knowledge of his family heritage.   I think the pamphlet is pretty much self explanatory and might be of interest to your group.

Subject: Robert de Clopton of Warwickshire and his descendants.

Hello everyone,

How are you today?  I cannot tell you how happy I was to find the Clopton Family Association website.  It is a great resource.

Our Special Collections and Archives has a document dating from c.1240 detailing a transfer of land between Sir Robert de Clopton and his son William de Clopton of Warwickshire.  We have found information on Robert.  However, the son, William, is a mystery to us.  He does not appear anywhere else in the records and histories that we have looked at.  We know that Robert had another son John, who in turn had a son James.  Could this William be Walter Clopton (the elder son of Robert) mentioned in The Visitations of Warwickshire 1619?  Walter being an erroneous name passed on through the generations?  Or was William a black sheep of the family who was lost to the family history over time?  Did William (or Walter) die early and the land passed to John leaving William forgotten?  So many questions and possibilities.

I am just curious if our document helps shed some light on some of the Clopton history that you already know.  Here is a transcription of the document that we have:

Let those who are present and those in future know that I Robert de Clopton gave and granted to my son, William, one yardland in the Grove which is part of the Clopton estate / manorial demesne with all its appurtenances in exchange for his homage and service, and that I have confirmed it with this charter. The yardland in question is that which  he once held as heriot / heritable property. [I have given and granted it to him] to be held and kept by him and his heirs freely and undisputedly as a holding granted in return for services and as hereditable property from me and my heirs. For this he has to pay an annual rent of twelve silver pennies, in two installments per year: six on the Feast Day of St. Michael and six on the Feast Day of St. Mary in March [the Annunciation, 25 March], on the income that belongs to me and to my heirs, without neglecting income from elsewhere; together with all goods and  privileges attached to the aformentioned land in the form of fields and pastures and everything which belongs to said yardland. And I, Robert, and all my heirs shall warrant all this aforementioned yardland together with all its appurtenances to said William and his heirs against all other claims in perpetuity. However, in order that this gift and grant of mine may remain firm and immovable, I have validated this charter with my seal in the presence of [the following] witnesses: the knights Sir William of Ludinton [and] Sir Robert of Valle. William of Edricheston, William of Waleford, Robert of Sidesam, Richard of Ludinton,  Nicholas the scribe,[1] and others.

Several faculty members here are writing an article on this document.  We are looking for any more details on the family and context of this record.  If you can help us in any way, it would be most appreciated.

Have a great day.  And kudos once again for such a helpful website.

Dear Sirs/Madams.
Do you know of a Uffleet coat-of-arms that may have been once quartered on one of the Clopton coats-of-arms in Suffolk, England.
Some variant scribe-forms for the Uffleet surname are/were: Ufflet, Ufflett, Usfleet, Usflete, Useflete, etc. This family may now be extinct.
Kind regards,

I am researching a branch of my Bolton family and find one of them married to a Jessie Clopton, daughter of John Clopton and Callie Bottoms.

John appears to have been born abt. 1860 in Arkansas and was still living in 1920, not sure when he died.  Jessie Clopton married a Lee Otha Bolton who was born in 1909, died 1979.

Does any of this match up with your database?  If so, what can you tell me?

Thanks,

I was recently given a small copy of Iliad with the inscription:  At 5 years of age I saw the moon for the first time at "Grassdale" where the owner of this book lived, my uncle by marriage, Dr. William A Clopton in the year 1867.

Does anyone know which Wm A Clopton lived at Grassdale?  I'm told it was in Virginia.  Do we know anything more about "grassdale?"

Thanks for any information.  The book was given to me by an elderly friend of mine with connections to Boswell, Witner, and Cartledge families.

Is George related to the Texas pioneer, Louis Adolphe Oge? How did George get his "Woodward" middle name?

My GGF was a Texas pioneer, Montcalen Fuqua Woodward. His brother, Caven Woodward, was a ranching partner and brother-in-law to Louis Oge. So I am just looking for connections. And I am fascinated with the way names of people important to parents were given to their babies.

I have Sir Thomas married to a Joan Cloptone sister of Sir Thomas de Cloptone, Sir Williams father. Therefore Joan is Williams Aunt--The strange thing being is that on you site I can not see any mention  of a Joan--Help

Dear Clopton Family,

I was honored to know James Malvern Clopton and to have many delightful conversations with him about his mother. I'd like all of you to know that I have written an article on Anne's cobweb paintings which will be featured in the Spring edition of the Huntsville Historical Review. Anne was a remarkable lady, a true American genius. The article is written not only in her honor, but in Malvern's, as well. He was a fine man who left the world a better place through his many kindnesses.

Sincerely,

It is with great sadness that I write this. My Dad, Lyndle Clopton of
Magnolia, KY died unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 17th, 2000. He was the
son of Willard and Cora Clopton and was 76 years old. Born In Larue County,
KY on May 18th, 1924. He was a World War II combat veteran of the battles of
Leyte Island and Okinawa. A member of the Clopton Family Association, and the
NRA. He was in charge of the Benningfield Chapel cemetery and worked
diligently to see to it's upkeep. He was buried at the Clopton Family
Cemetery at Benningfield Chapel between Magnolia and Mt. Sherman, KY. He is
descended from the John Robert Clopton line. He was a man of Honor, always
the same to everyone and the same each time someone saw and talked to him. He
was always generous and unselfish, always willing to drop off what he was
doing and go help someone else. He was a good man, the best I've ever known
or met and will be severely missed. He is survived by his wife (Sally
Clopton), two sons (Larry and Doug Clopton), a daughter-in-law (Amy Clopton), a
grandson (Jason Clopton), and a granddaughter (Heather Dennis).

And I should have noted: He was a believer.

I am a researcher and I am trying to establish the familial relationship between the 18th century preacher, Devereux Jarratt and the 19th century renaissance man (and Baptist preacher) Abner Clopton.

I know that Walter Clopton, the Elder of Callowell in New Kent County was married to Mary Jarratt" - Is this Mary Jarrat the sister of Robert Jarrat, Devereux Jarratt's father?

Also, as I'm sure you are aware Devereux Jarratt mentions his "uncle clopton" in his famous autobiography - I'm assuming he's speaking of Walter Clopton, his father's sister's husband. Is that correct? THANK YOU.

My grandma's parents were Charles Franklin Clopton and Sophronia Nixon.
My grandfather was born Jan. 16, 1885 in Arkansas and die on Sept. 5, 1959.
In working on the genealogy for my great grandma's Sophronia's side of the family her sister Lillie Odar Nixon married a David Crockett Clopton born in 1897 and die in 1941.
I do not have any other information on this family since my grandfather die before I was born.

any members of the family and because of their ages and health I don't seem to

Hi!

My name is Benjamin Fenton. I found your GREAT website through ancestry.com. Anyway, I have a geneology question. I have just started doing some digging on the Clopton side of my family. I noticed you have listed a Robert Clopton, Jr., born 7/28/1728. Do you have any information on his wife or decendents? I am trying to figure out if he is "my" Robert Clopton. The only information I have on "my" Robert is that he was born in Virginia about 1728. According to my records, he had a son named Robert born February 26, 1755 and died abt. 1841. If you have any other information, please let me know. If not, I really enjoyed visiting your site!
