History and Genealogy

The Clopton family surname is associated with an extensive history in England and America. An early ancestor claimed lands in East Anglia, arriving in England with William the Conqueror in 1066. His descendents lived in Suffolk and later in other places in the south of England. Eventually a single surviving Clopton male traveled to North America in the late 1600's. Most, if not all, present day Clopton relatives are descendents of William Clopton (1655-c1732) of County Essex, England and New Kent County Virginia and his wife, Ann (Booth) Dennett Clopton (1647-1716) of Virginia.
