Walter de Cloptone, Lord of Chapperley Manor, Wickhambrook

Walter de Cloptone was the son of Sir William De Cloptone, also called De Cloptunne. He inherited from his father Chapperley Manor or the Manor of Clopton Hall in 1294. Walter was living in the time of Edward the First (1291) and died 20th Edward II (1327). His first wife was Alice FitzHugh, the daughter and coheir of Warin FitzHugh. They had two children. The son and heir, Sir William De Cloptone, Knight, Lord of Toppesfield Manor and Newenham Hall in Ashdon, County Essex; and Sir Thomas De Cloptone. Present day Clopton relatives are direct descendants of their second son, Sir Thomas De Cloptone.

Alice died and Walter married a second wife, Anwett, a widow, and the daughter and heiress of Weyland. They had a son named John. Evidently Anwett and John outlived Walter. A Harleian Charter refers to Anwett, "once the wife of Walter Cloptone and her son John," (conceding) one piece of land lying in the field called Salestrefeld. "Given at Wyckhambrook on Monday next after the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord in the 11th year of the reign of Edward III, after the Conquest.

It is known that Walter and Alice were buried at Chipley Priory, as was their second son, Sir. Thomas. The site is now owned by the Wheatley family.
