The devastating hurricane that raked the Carolinas recently caused us to remember that Charleston has suffered other disasters in the past. In 1887 a horrendous earthquake jarred the city, sending shockwaves throughout the South. In Putnam County, Georgia, Harvey Gordon Clopton, a newborn baby, was snatched from his cradle by his mother, Isabel Lancaster Clopton, when their home began to shake. She fled outside and as she stood in the yard with the baby waiting for the tremors to abate, the chimney crumbled. As the bricks began to fall, one actually grazed the baby's head.
