Bio/HistoryDr. Alford Clopton of Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama

Dr. Alford Clopton was the son of Waldegrave Clopton and his wife, Elizabeth Cocke (name not proved but marriage was legitimate). He was born in 1787 in New Kent County, Virginia. He died in Montgomery County (Montgomery) Alabama in 1873. One June 25, 1812, he married Sarah "Sallie" Kendrick in Putnam County (Eatonton) Georgia. She was the daughter of Martin Kendrick and Jane Whitehead. He is a direct descendant of the first William Clopton, Gentleman, and his wife, Ann (Booth) Dennett Clopton.

While living in Putnam County, Alford was Justice of the Peace, 314th District, from 1813 through September 23, 1817. He served in the House of Representatives of the Georgia General Assembly in 1823, 1824-25 Ex., and 1825, although the State of Georgia Official and Statistical Register published by the Georgia Department of Archives and History incorrectly identifies him as Alfred.

He was granted 202 ½ acres in Monroe County in the 1820/1821 Land Lotteries of Georgia. In 1831, Alford and Sallie moved to Bibb County (Macon) Georgia, taking with them possibly six of the youngest of their ten children. He moved to Montgomery, Alabama before 1850.

Their children were: Mary Ann Clopton Reid, Ann Green Clopton Wiley, Eliza Jane Clopton Fort, Martin Kendrick Clopton, (Judge) David Clopton, Sarah Clopton Pierce, Nathaniel Vanderwall Clopton, Alford H. Clopton, (Dr.) Albert Gallatin Clopton, and James Osgood Andrews Clopton.
