Anthony Clopton, Sr. of TexasThe son of Benjamin Michaux Clopton and Justina Augusta Haden, Anthony Clopton was born in Bastrop, Texas on July 20, 1837. A direct descendant of William Clopton, Gentleman and Ann (Booth) Dennett Clopton, he married Margaret Sophronia (Mayes) Kegins December 31, 1861. Margaret Sophronia was born June 7, 1842. Anthony died November 6, 1877 in Wimberley, Texas, and Margaret Sophronia, on October 6, 1927. They had eight children: John Hoggatt Clopton, Walter Edmund Clopton, Agnes Sophronia Clopton, Daniel Benjamin Clopton, Justina Leora Clopton Brooks, Sarah Elizabeth Clopton Tanner, Caroline Amelia Clopton Matthews, and Anthony Clopton, Jr.
In 1862 or '63, Anthony enlisted in the confederate States Army with Company D, Davidson's (afterward Daly's and, finally, Regsdale's) Battalion, Texas Cavalry. Records from that period show him as serving in various capacities including: the Quartermaster's office as clerk, Quartermaster Sergeant, and Wagon Master.
The 1870 United States Census lists Anthony as a farmer. He also worked in his father's blacksmith shop. He was a furniture maker. He made a bed for his wife and it is still in the possession of his descendants. He purchased 70 acres of land in Hays County Texas on May 4, 1877. This land was located on the west side of Cypress fork at Jacob's Well. The property was sold by his children in 1933.
